2009 Migration Status - 20 Oct. 2009
Hi Everyone,
Argos data was late yesterday and early today, so this is a quick recap for the past 2 days.
Island Girl had an amazing journey on Sunday (18 Oct). As previously reported, she roosted overnight Saturday in the Florida Keys.
- At 10 a.m. (local time), she had reached the north coast of Cuba. But she didn't stop there for long.
- By 6 p.m., she had crossed Cuba and flown southwest across the Gulf of Mexico, taking a more southerly route than the expected flight to the Yucatan Peninsula. Her 6 p.m. GPS signal shows her passing just west of the Cayman Islands at a speed of 73 kph (45 mph).
- By 2 a.m. she had reached a point about 200 km north of the Honduran coast, and apparently spent the night at sea (as she had done in the Atlantic, with no obvious roost sites other than the water).
Her total distance for 18 Oct was 949 km (590 mi).
At 10 a.m. the next morning she was observed approaching the coast of Honduras at 76 kph (47 mph). The remaining GPS signals for 19 Oct and this morning's overnight roost were missing (apparently due to a weak battery), but a Doppler signal late last night shows that she reached the north coast of Honduras sometime yesterday afternoon or evening.
Sparrow King hasn't been idle, either. Sometime between the morning of 17 Oct and the morning of 19 Oct, he flew the overwater route from Panama to Colombia, near the Ecuador border. That trip was 599 km (372 mi).
